The CNN documentary BlackFish, has shown some light on the treatment of orcas in captivity. I decided to use BlackFish for my assignment because it is something that people need to know the truth about. Many times we are excited to attend zoos, aquariums, circuses, and Sea World. However, we don't think about the animals and their living conditions once we leave. The documentary gives a voice to the whales who cannot otherwise tell their side to living in captivity. Throughout the documentary it shows images of where the whales are being held. I plan to show the dimensions of the modules the whales live in compared to the vast ocean where they should and are born to be. The Orcas were taken from their natural habitat as babies. They were separated from their mothers in order to provide entertainment. There are clips in the film that show fisherman capturing the whales from the sea. I plan to show whales that are in captivity as well as whales that are free in the ocean in order to see the difference.
The purpose of the documentary is to show that whales being kept in captivity become hostile and dangerous. However, there is no proof of them killing in the wild where they are naturally born to be. Whales are not meant to swim with people. When whales are kept in small modules then expected to perform they will become violent. There has been many cases proving that trainers in Sea World should not be swimming with the killer whales.
Even though I don't condone these attractions, these animals cannot get thrown back into the wild. They will not know how to act. Their whole life they have been hand fed if they try to go into the wild they won't know how to fend for themselves. That being said, they do provide entertainment for many people young and old. I have been attending zoos and aquariums since I was little, and I still do to this day. These places are great family outings that create memories for so many people, young and old. I plan on showing the positive side to these attractions. For example I will include pictures and videos of happy crowds and smiling faces at these attractions. We do it all the time, we don't pay attention to how the animals might be treated in these forms attractions we are only aware of the pure enjoyment it brings ourselves and our families. That is the point I plan on making with my mashup video.
